[edit] Focus

Established in 1960, Rutherford & Chekene is one of California’s foremost engineering practices providing structural and geotechnical engineering. With a staff of 95, R&C has held responsibility for the design and construction of over 6,000,000 square feet of office space in the last decade for clients that include leading corporate, institutional and development companies.

Structural engineers at Rutherford & Chekene have designed projects using Revit since 2004. With over $3B in design or construction utilizing the software, the firm has leveraged this extensive BIM experience to improve the dynamics of communications within the design team and with clients to create a more satisfying and collaborative experience. For instance, R&C recently participated on the successful design/build team competing for the UC Davis Graduate School of Management where the BIM model was developed to support "real-time" cost estimating within the team. Autodesk awarded a Revit BIM Experience Award to R&C in 2008 in recognition of its innovative use of the software.

The first engineer-mandated use of fly ash in concrete was by R&C for the Monterey Bay Aquarium in 1984, and high volume fly ash (HVFA) since 1997 for UC Berkeley Wurster Hall (first UC Berkeley Project that incorporated high volume fly ash). This collaborative effort between R&C, UC Berkeley, and other members of the design team familiarized the local suppliers and contractors and opened doors for UC Berkeley to use HVFA in its other projects. Today the R&C portfolio includes many LEED certified facilities including Platinum certified buildings.
