Commentary
"(Bramante's) self-assured distillation of antique forms was apparent even in his first Roman building, the cloister of Sta. Maria della Pace where the heavy piers with applied orders in sequence (Corinthian and Ionic) on the two stories, the trabeation of the upper story, and the unadorned, sculpturesque power of the lower story, were derived from systems used in the Colosseum, the Theater of Marcellus, and other eloquent ruins."
