[edit] Description

The 3,400 square foot residence is located at the mouth of Bowlees Creek as it opens to the Bay. Instead of fronting other residential properties across the narrow creek, the house is rotated to look to the horizon in the direction of the summer solstice. An exterior stair along the river leads to a partially shaded and fully occupiable roof terrace. The roof and the overhanging terraces help stretch the house towards the Bay.

The roof terrace stair steps to give additional height to the living room below and to offer distant views of the barrier islands. A cypress arbor built of 28 feet long laminated beams shades the lower part of the terrace. When completed, the roof terrace will be serviced by an elevator, a bath, and a small kitchen.

Due to the high flood elevation, the first living level was raised a full story above grade. The bedrooms are located above the garage, while the main living spaces are laid out on the top floor to take full advantage of the long views over Sarasota Bay. The formal dining room cantilevers eight feet from the south façade to help cast dramatic shadows on the street elevation throughout the day.

The house, designed for Drs. Jay and Janet Schrock, is scheduled to be completed by January 2007. Dr. Jay Schrock is Dean of the USF’s School of Hotel and Restaurant Management in Sarasota.
