St. Paul's Episcopal church, Chattanooga, is one of four Tennessee buildings by architect William Halsey Wood (1855-1897). Others include St. Mary's Cathedral in Memphis and two structures at The Unversity of the South, Sewanee. Configured as a simple rectangle with a fully apsed chancel, St. Paul's is reminiscent of Emmanuel Episcopal Church (1884-1886) in Pittsburgh, PA, a late work by the renowned H. H. Richardson: despite differences in size, the plans and predominant red brick are common to both, and Richardson's design was completed in time for Wood to have become familiar with it.

Wood's friendship with Rt. Rev. Charles T. Quintard (1824-1898), Bishop of Tennessee, may have led to these four important commissions so far from the architect's home base in Newark, New Jersey. Bishop Quintard was one of four clergy who officiated at Wood's wedding in 1889, and the architect would have been known to the bishop as one of four finalists in the competition for the Cathedral of St. John-the-Divine in New York City.
