The dormitory consists of two wings, or residences, that are connected at one side by a main circulation hub.

“There are 250 students in each residence (both sexes) and the students’ bedrooms are positioned in the fingers, which are pointed towards a magnificent view of the North Sea and the Scottish mountains. The non-repetitive accommodation (i.e. dining hall, games rooms, etc.) is located in the web where the fingers join. There is a glazed promenade level about halfway up the building and, from this, internal staircase give access up or down to the students’ rooms. This promenade is the main artery of circulation and is intended to be the major element of sociability...The student’s private room is obviously the most important accommodation in the building and every room has a window angled like an eye towards the view. This angling which is a displacement of the room articulates its position on the façade and therefore, even with a very structurally motivated scheme, we have maintained as fundamental the expression of the most important accommodation.”
