Commentary

"St.-Front in Périgueux (was) built largely in the second quarter of the twelfth century (and heavily restored in the nineteenth century). Laid out in a Greek-cross plan, St.-Front employs the archetypal Byzantine dome-on-pendentives in each of the five units—four arms and the crossing. Although schematically close to the Byzantine model, in actual appearance St.-Front is anything but Byzantine. Its structure and space are untouched by Byzantine fluidity and ambiguity. The building is designed with uncompromising stereometric clarity, the lucid volumes of space—hemisphere (dome and pendentive zones), cube, semicylinder (the barrel vaults)—are defined by massive solids deprived of all decoration that might blur their form.
