Commentary

"This hillside house combines many of the aspects of Breuer's often varied 'long house' and his 'binuclear plan'.

The rooms are all on one level, divided by the entrance hall, with the adult living-dining area on one side and the sleeping and children's areas on the other. The children's rooms are grouped around a central playroom. The house poised on a hill slope—overlooking the vast expanse of Lake Superior—seems almost to float; slender gangways give access. Glass has been used from floor to ceiling on (the) lake side of the house. To protect this generous expanse of glass from solar radiation, both horizontal wood louvres and projected panes of solar glass have been used as sunshades. The terrace beneath the house serves as a covered play area with outdoor cooking."
