I don't recall what actually distinguishes a "single house" from a "double house." I think it has something to do with the way rooms are arranged along the central corridor, with a single house having a single loaded corridor adjacent to the porch and a double house have a double loaded corridor (probably without the side porches). I believe double houses are less common but because they are less obviously recognizable I may have simply not noticed them.
