A NEW BILINGUAL THEATRE SCHOOL OPENS IN MEXICO
. The Theatre School offers full and part-time courses and workshops, for children, teenagers and adults, in all areas related to theatre performance including dancing, singing, stand-up comedy and acting.
. The Theatre School staff, all experienced teachers from Mexico, the United States, Canada, and the UK, are working practitioners and specialists within their area of expertise.
. The Theatre School is the first centre in Latin America to offer the internationally recognised LAMDA Performance Exams, from The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
Offering a contemporary actor training, including classes in dancing, singing, history of theatre, text exploration and acting techniques for Radio and Screen, The Theatre School is unique in Mexico as it teaches classes in both English and Spanish. The school opens as the first centre in Latin America to offer the LAMDA Performance Exams and includes daily English-speaking classes to their programme to help boost confidence, within our students, when working in a second language, regardless of their career choice.
“Our school follows the European style of conservatoire training where we combine regular classes with a flexible curriculum, working with industry professionals teaching workshops and classes when their schedule permits.” says Stephen Henry, director of The Theatre School. “We are sure our graduates will be fully prepared to work, both in Spanish and English, and skilled to perform on the international stage.”
Henry, who has a degree in Education and Drama from St. Mary’s University College, also trained in Theatre Directing at the Drama Studio, London, where he has taught acting and directing for the last decade. He plans to open a theatrical agency connected with the school, “collaborating with our colleagues in Europe and The USA, to assist our graduates with finding work. The Theatre School has a simple philosophy; to put the students first and do all that we can to prepare them for working in a difficult and constantly changing industry.”
THE COURSES
The Theatre School initially opens at Manuel M. Ponce, 101, Col. Guadalupe Inn, in Mexico City, before moving to a purpose-built permanent site, with its own theatre space, in the summer of 2009. The principal course, The Drama School, is a 2-year full-time programme, training actors in classical and modern performance techniques. Auditions start from May 2009 for entrance to the course this October.
During the weekends, the school offers courses for 10-17 year olds. The Stage School is ideal from 10-13 year olds, with classes in acting, singing, dancing, and stagecraft, and The Youth Theatre follows a similar programme but with the addition of a public production created by the students at the end of the course. Both courses run from 9am – 1pm each Saturday, starting 25th of April, with The Youth Theatre also offering Friday classes from 4pm – 7pm.
During the summer The Theatre School will be running a Summer School open to 7-17 year olds for 3 weeks during July. More information about any of courses, and updates on current Theatre Workshops, can be found on the website www.thetheatreschool.com.
