Commentary
"The original temple was among the Seven Wonders of the World but was burnt down in 356 by a maniac, Herostratos, on the night of the birth of Alexander. It was rebuilt on exactly the same plan, but raised by a foundation to show off its splendid proportions (115 by 55 metres/380 by 180 feet; height of columns: 19 metres/62 feet). As before, the 36 columns had reliefs above the base, one of which was executed by Skopas. Typical features of the Ionic of Asia Minor were the absence of a frieze over the architrave and denticules."
