Commentary

"The clever renovation created a mecca for tourists and other shoppers. The old, brick Del Monte Cannery, conveniently located near Fisherman's Wharf, was gutted and entirely rebuilt inside, transformed into three levels of varied commercial space served by elevators, an escalator, and seven different staircases—all arranged, says Esherick, with 'enough turns, zigzags and corners...to offer at least some hint of a maze.'
