"Faced with a growing demand for convenient student housing, MICA sought a new student residence that would serve as an exciting visual gateway to the school and highlight the Northern edge of campus. Conceived in an interoffice design contest among RTKL’s global offices, the 99,000-SF 11-story structure uses a distinctive circular structure sectioned into three pods of residential units surrounding a private central courtyard to address the constraints of the site. The drum exterior features streamlined glass panels varying in color, transparency, and reflectivity. A 10-floor fritted glass studio tower serves as an anchor, partially shielding noise while functioning as a billboard for the artwork displayed in 38 private studios and two communal studios. Wrapping the building’s base is a wall that defines the structure's edge along the street. First-floor amenities further link to the local community, fusing public and private space with a café, black box theater and gallery." - RTKL Associates Inc.
