The state-of-the-art facility promotes international marine science education and awareness of the oceanic environment. Its undulating forms, reflecting the sea and site, are seen clearly from the coast without dominating the landscape. EHDD prepared the master plan and designed low-impact buildings, dividing the site into distinct zones—a natural zone or greenbelt, support facilities, laboratory/science buildings, the aquarium, and parking. The heavy structure can withstand extreme forces of wind, water, and earthquake; public space is raised on a plinth above life-support and service spaces; sea doors prevent basement flooding; and a serpentine retaining wall protects the entry court from wind.
