The firm filed for bankruptcy in 2004. Prior to that, however, the firm played a major role in shaping architecture in Wisconsin throughout most of the Twentieth Century. The firm was founded in Sheboygan, Wisconsin by Edgar Stubenrauch in the 1920's after his architectural education at the University of Illinois. Together with longtime associate Fredrick Steinhaus and other employees, the firm design thousands of public buildings throughout the small towns of Wisconsin, and played a major role in training other architects who went on to form their own practices. While the firm did not develop a signature "style," they earned the trust of their customers. Time and again, they would be invited back into the same community to design a bank, a fire station, a church, or a school.
