"The center is designed to welcome and serve Monticello’s 450,000 annual visitors in support of the client’s dual mission of education and preservation. Designed as a series of pavilions surrounding a courtyard and nestled into the hillside, it sits lightly in the land. Individual pavilions housing ticketing, orientation film/education, café, gallery, and retail are arranged in an intuitive order, allowing the visitor to choose the path best suited to his or her needs. The lower level (below the courtyard) is accessible at grade to graciously welcome disabled guests. The Smith Education Center, including three classrooms that double as seminar spaces, and a hands-on Discovery Room with family-friendly exhibits, are on this level. Guests may board the shuttle bus to the house at the upper level. Exterior materials of cedar siding, local fieldstone, copper roofs, and Spanish cedar windows were chosen for their beauty and durability. Three green roofs contribute to the sustainable design." - Ayers/Saint/Gross
