Troy Savings Bank and Music Hall
32 Second Street, Troy, New York:
Constructed in 1871–1875 to house a rare combination of functions—music and mammon— this building contains a bank on the first floor and a 1,250-seat concert hall above. The idea came from the bank’s board of directors, and architect George B. Post gave concrete, or rather stone expression to its members’ public-spirited thoughts. His French Renaissance building is one the finest 19th-century auditoriums in the United States. It continues to dominate downtown Troy and—recently restored—continues to provide an exceptional venue for musical events.
Statement of Significance (as of designation - April 11, 1989):
Constructed in 1872, the Savings Bank and Music Hall building complex was designed to include a banking floor and adjacent commercial rental space, with the Music Hall located above the bank on the upper floors. It remains one of the finest 19th-century auditorium structures in the United States. This is an early example of George B. Post's mature style and one of the very few of his buildings that remains basically unchanged.
Condition: The Troy Savings Bank building is in good condition. It houses the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall and a branch bank office of First Niagara Bank, which acquired The Troy Savings Bank in 2003. The building is owned under a condominium agreement in which the bank branch and shell structure are owned by First Niagara Bank, and the music hall unit by the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall Foundation. The building is maintained by First Niagara Bank.
