Building completed: 1859

Main at Granby streets

Total cost of construction: $203.903.75

This building,in a city with a long and proud history as one of the prindpal ports on the East Coast. is a notable essay in the late Classic Revival style. Like other structures of the type, it's exterior is ccmpletely of granite and features a long flight of stairs leading up to a portico with six fluted columns crowned by Corinthian capitals. It is the only original Custom House built during the 1850's still owned and managed by the federal govenment. The struetuce still contains all of it's ociginal cast and wrought-iron beams. Most notable is the pristene condion of the original roof framing which is completely of iron.Despite a few interior cosmetic changes, it differs very little from that day in October of 1858 when it was ficst opened to the public. In fact, the Custom Service and Post Office department were so anxious to get into the new strcture that they moved in before the building was completed. The U.S. District Court would wait another year before the third floor could be completed.
