"This project renovates an underused 1927 5-story building into classroom and office space for several university academic programs and also relocates offices for the Dean of these programs into the building.
"The interior is organized around the historic circular stair and connected lobbies, with double-loaded corridors leading to classrooms, offices, conference rooms and lecture hall. Colored glass canopies are inserted into the historic stair to identify the entry points to the various academic programs housed in the building. Lobbies and corridors, filled with daylight from perimeter windows and glazed office and classroom doors, are designed to function as secondary gathering spaces. Classrooms and conference rooms are outfitted with state of the art IT and AV equipment.
"The building envelope was insulated, and the historic steel sash windows were replaced with similar insulated units. A new stair was added at the back to meet egress codes; it is expressed as a simple volume which glows at night, and is compatible with the historic building façade. The exterior limestone and brick masonry was cleaned and repaired." - Cho Benn Holback + Associates
