This page contains ideas on how to change Archiplanet's wiki into a semantic wiki by adding attributes and relations to each building article.

[edit] Semantic Building Pages

  • It can be confusing to decide which parts of a page should be stored as an attribute or a relation. Many of these are up for discussion, and others have issues that are noted in the table below.

[edit] Possible Semantic Attributes for Buildings

Attributes are descriptions of the characteristics of an object. For more info on Attributes, click here.

Attribute Name Data Type Description
Attribute:Building name Type:String full name of building (same as the page name)
Attribute:Also known as Type:String if a building has multiple names

Describing Location

see [1] for a discussion on using attributes vs. references to represent location
Attribute:Address Type:String for getting directions to a building from a mapping service, or just for reference
Attribute:Coordinates Type:Geographic coordinate for automated mapping links
Attribute:City Type:String should probably use the relation Relation:Has location or Relation:Has location city
Attribute:Country Type:String should probably use the relation Relation:Has location Country instead
Attribute:Elevation above sea level Type:Geographic length could be interesting to produce an elevation of the world based on every buildings elevation relative to the building's height or some other property

Time

- see [2] for a discussion of representing years semantically
Attribute:Age Type:Time not really interesting, since this can be automatically calculated based on the completion date attribute, or end date attribute.
Attribute:Project start date Type:Integer to describe the year a project design began, which is often different from the start of the "construction". See also Relation:Project started in.
Attribute:Project end date Type:Integer to describe the year of completion of the "project" which is possibly different from the completion of the "construction". see also Relation:Project completed in.
Attribute:Construction start date Type:Integer to describe the year the construction of a building began, which is often different from the start of the "project". See also Relation:Construction started in.
Attribute:Construction end date Type:Integer to describe the year of completion of the "construction" which is possibly different from the completion of the "project". see also Relation:Construction completed in.
Attribute:Destruction date Type:Integer if the building was destroyed, demolished, for whatever reason, it should be noted. see also Relation:Demolished in or possibly Relation:Destroyed in, or even Relation:Imploded in.

Other Attributes

Attribute:Built area Type:Area perhaps this could be the "footprint" of the building, or it could describe the area of usable space built based on the definition from the AIA, or some other standard body
Attribute:Area Type:Geographic area not sure if it's possible to include something this detailed, but could be interesting to sort buildings tagged with this information by size vs. type, etc...
Attribute:Budget Type:Currency amount could be expanded to include initial budget, actual cost, including inflation, etc... *future development...
Attribute:Height Type:Length obviously for an easily made chart of the tallest buildings and shortest buildings in the world

[edit] Possible Relations for Semantic Building Pages

Relations are machine-processable descriptions of relationships between wiki articles. Read here for more info on relations. Many of the examples below could possibly serve the purposes of the Archiplanet wiki better as Attributes.

Relation Name Description

People, Firms, and Companies

Relation:Constructed by could be the same as Relation:Has contractor or Relation:Has constructor
Relation:Designed by also could be considered the same as Relation:Has architect or Relation:Has designer
Relation:Built by could be considered as the architect or the constructor, this is ambiguous
Relation:Funded by who paid for the building's design and construction
Relation:Has architect architect or team of architects, each building could have multiple
Relation:Has contractor to link to a specific builder / contractor company or individual
Relation:Named after for linking to people for whom the building was named after. same as Relation:Is named after

Location

Relation:Has location country self-explanatory
Relation:Has location state self-explanatory
Relation:Located in a place, not necessarily a city name or country name, but a place with an article
Relation:Has location city needs to be discussed... the differences b/w using city as an attribute vs. using it as a relation
Relation:Has location US county could possibly add other more detailed geographic info, such as county, region, province, street, district, etc...

Time

Relation:Project started in relation used for linking to wiki page for that year. see also Attribute:Project start date.
Relation:Project completed in relation used for linking to wiki page for that year. see also Attribute:Project end date.
Relation:Construction started in relation used for linking to wiki page for that year. see also Attribute:Construction start date.
Relation:Construction completed in relation used for linking to wiki page for that year. see also Attribute:Construction end date.

Others

- these could possibly be stored as attributes as well. see this example: [3]
Relation:Made of could possibly be used to describe main building materials used. or Construction Material, Attribute:Material
Relation:Has Architectural Period Could also be Relation:Has Architectural Style or perhaps better Attribute:Architectural Style or Attribute:Architectural Period
Relation:Has Building Type according to the dictionary of building types from the National Register of HIstoric Places or the DAML+OIL Building type list which I can no longer find the link to... Attribute:Building type
Relation:Has Construction Type idea taken from greatbuildings.com, could be used in this context as a delicious style tagging system, or as Attribute:Construction type.
Relation:Has Climate this might not be necessary, since it could be grabbed from the city page that is related in Relation:Has location city, or Attribute:Climate
Relation:Has Context see [4] for possible types. others exist as well... or attribute Attribute:Context.
Relation:Has Architectural Element could also be used as a delicious style tagging, where one building page could have more than one architectural element. probably better as Attribute:Architectural Element
Relation:Was location of could be used if a special event was held at the building
Relation:Famous for text about why the building is significant

[edit] National Register for Historic Places

Here is a simple database schema from the National Register for Historic Places. These are the fields they give free access to, but they are certainly not all the fields included in the full private database.

  • Reference Number (Refnum) The number assigned in the National Register of Historic Places Listing. This is comparable to the Social Security number for people. It is the one identifier of the historic resource that uniquely identifies it and has become THE number of record.
  • Heritage Area 1 (Heritage-A) The Heritage Area or one of the two Heritage Areas where the Historic Place is located.
  • Heritage Area 2 (Heritare2) The second Heritage Area, if any, in which the Historic Place is located.
  • Resource Name (Resname) The name of the resource as listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Street Address (Address) The number and street location of the Historic Place. Some addresses are restricted and are not included.
  • City (City) The city where the Historic Place is located.
  • State (STCODE) The two letter State code where the Historic Place is located.
  • County Code (CountyCD) Federal Alpha numeric codes for the location of the Historic Place (e.g. PA0009 for Bedford County Pennsylvania). List of Alphanumeric Codes for Heritage Areas.
  • County (County) The name of the County where the Historic Place is located.
  • Architect\Builder (Architect) The name of the Architect or Builder.
  • Area of Significance (Areasq) The general classification of its significance as a Historic Place. Examples of the classifications include commerce, architecture, Asian, military and education.
  • Architectural Style (Arstyl) Broad classifications of the Architectural Style of the Property (e.g. Italianate, Mission\Spanish Style, Second Empire)
  • Building Function (Func) Broad categories of building uses including religious property, single dwelling, etcetera.
  • Level of Significance (Levsg) National, State, Local
  • Building Material (Mat) The exterior building material for the Historic Place.
  • Historic Period (Period) These are twenty-five year intervals for the past 200 years or so and longer periods for early times.
