[edit] Thanks
Dowen, thanks for your help and your patience. I came across Archiplanet on Monday and thought I would have a little fun with it and I am still trying to become familiar. I believe I understand the format as you explained it to me, but I am a little confused with a few things.
One is the User Talk of which I am doing now and hoping I am doing it correctly. I probably will understand more thoroughly with use. The other is a project I added under the "Projects" section of the Philadelphia office location which is no longer there.
Again, I appreciate you time and your help!
[edit] Images
Hi David,
You seem to be sort of in charge here, so I have a few questions. I noticed that on the Hominy School article, you put the two images I provided into a gallery, but you haven't done so with any of the articles I've only put one image in. Is this a pattern you would like to see continued? On a broader note, although I have no training in architecture, I do enjoy looking at buildings and as indicated on my user page, taking pictures of them. Since it seems likely that I will be the only user here visiting these small town sites in Oklahoma, other than the obvious whole building shot, is there anything in particular I should be trying to get pictures of? I do try to get pictures of decorative details that seem interesting to me, but is there anything else I should be looking for? Dsmdgold 08:22, 18 April 2007 (PDT)
[edit] Palo Alto office building
Hi I was just wondering why you took off the Palo Alto office building picture. It's the main office and I would like it to go along with the San Francisco and Eugene office pictures. Would you please add it becuse you obviously suspended me and I can do no further editing. thanks... Jwatanabe 22:14, 18 March 2008
[edit] The House that Lives
Thank you for your assistance with editing the page The House that Lives. I am unfamiliar with the style standards for your website and appreciate the changes you made. Is it acceptable to include information about the properties, other than the architectural features? I am attempting to have the Edith Bogue Magnolia tree on the property designated as historic and having the property already so designated is a plus. Michael Ronayne 16:42, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
Dear Michael,
Thanks for asking! It's fine to include information about the magnolia. Please just insert the text description into a subsection of the "Discussion" section. Dowen 15:17, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Ambiguous Categories
I noticed that there are some duplicate/ambiguous categories for British buildings, eg:
- Category:Buildings in England
- Category:Buildings in England, United Kingdom
- Category:Buildings in Scotland
- Category:Buildings in Scotland, United Kingdom
- Category:Buildings in Wales
- Category:Buildings in Wales, United Kingdom
I moved all the Scottish buildings into Category:Buildings in Scotland & the Welsh buildings into Category:Buildings in Wales, but you stopped me before I was able to work on England. I don't understand how reverting to the previous confusion is helpful. james 2008-09-05 12:26
Dear James,
There are certainly elements to be cleaned up at Archiplanet. But as it happens, the work you were doing was heading in the opposite direction of the one intended. The current naming policy for most buildings in the UK works like this: "Building Name, City, Country, United Kingdom". Likewise, the "country" field which generally determines the associated Category should also follow the pattern of "Country, United Kingdom". Some older building data may not include ", United Kingdom". And there are some buildings (Great Buildings) whose names should not change.
If you find a UK building with a "country" value that does not include ", United Kingdom", you are welcome to add it. In that way, we can move away from the two ambiguous categories.
Thanks very much again, for your interest in Archiplanet! Dowen 14:36, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
- Dear David,
- I feel that the inclusion of United Kingdom in the name of every (British) article & category is needlessly unwieldy. My philosophy is one of minimum useful disambiguation. For example, would any single person hearing of London, England, ask, "Do you mean the London, England, United Kingdom?".
- It is also incomplete. In the same way that people use United States to mean The United States of America; United Kingdom is used to mean The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland. It may also change if Scotland or Wales get devolution. But London will still be London, England & Glasgow will still be Glasgow, Scotland.
- I'm not trying to purge United Kingdom from Archiplanet. The category, Buildings in United Kingdom, directs users to the other country categories so there would be no confusion.

[edit] cornelisseverrijt
on the wiki "Cornelisseverrijt, Rotterdam, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands" i have seen you have protected the site. However the practice does not exist anymore. The domain name cornelisseverrijt.nl has also been canceled. Is it possible to remove the wiki altogether?
[edit] Catagories
Delanson is an incorporated Village within the Town of Duanesburg. It would be convienent to have the Delanson Historic District and the Jenkins House, also in Delanson, listed in the Duanesburg [[Category:{National Register of Historic Places in Duanesburg, New York, USA}]]. However When I included that Catagory Code in the Jenkins House, Delanson, New York page it simply shows up at the bottom of the page, and I'm not convinced that page shows up in that catagory. Also, when editing any of the pages I don't see any of the Catagory codes within the body of the text. Is the ability to modify the Catagories restricted? I don't understand. [edit] Foreign characters
Hi! Thanks for your comment! On an article that I changed earlier about Snohetta AS, Oslo, Norway I tried changing the name of the company to "Snøhetta" which is the correct spelling of the company name. You later changed it back to Snohetta commenting:
Firm name field may not include the "ø" character, for crosslinking compatability with the ArchitectureWeek Architects Directory.
I'm wondering where I can find more details on this. If you look at wikipedia, they would have a main article named "Snøhetta", then a page called "Snohetta" redirecting to "Snøhetta". Which I think looks more right, and is also easier to search for. For instance, if you search for "snohetta", you get a result, if you type "snøhetta", you don't.
If this is a technical limit of the ArchitectureWeek site? Do you know if there's any way to fix this. In the long term, I think it might be a lot better to accept these characters.
