Statement of Significance (as of National Historic Landmark designation - May 4, 1983):
This factory (1862), as enlarged, has housed the W & L. E. Gurley Company, which is known worldwide for the design and manufacture of precision mathematical and engineering instruments. Gurley company still manufactures instruments here. The building, which has been restored, also houses the Gurley Museum.
